An Oak Creek Sentry store will close on May 28, according to a notice filed Friday with the state's Department of Workforce Development.


The closure will affect about 50 employees, said Dan Welch, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1444, which represents 40 employees at the store at 8561 S. Howell Ave.

The food and commercial workers Local 73A also represents about five meat department workers there.

The supermarket is owned by Robin Reid, who, along with Gary Grundl, recently announced plans to open a Sentry store at Elmbrook Plaza in Brookfield at the former site of a Kohl's Food Store.

Reid could not be immediately reached for comment.

The union is looking to set up a meeting with Reid to discuss the Oak Creek closing. Welch said he hopes the displaced workers will be offered jobs at the Elmbrook Plaza location, which is expected to open by mid-May.

Welch said the closure was a surprise. He said Reid had just asked to sit down with the union and talk about ways to deal with rising health care costs.

The Oak Creek Sentry store is located near a Pick N' Save at 8770 S. Howell.

Grundl also owns a Sentry at 7140 S. 76th St. in Franklin.

Add Sussex Sentry to the list of closing as of the 30th. I think Pick n Save has a monopoly going!

< sigh > Not much left around here, just Pick N Save in Crud-ahy and Oak Creek, and the Pig in Oak Creek. Rumor has it that Pick N Save might be going into the old Kohl's on Chicago/Drexel in South Milwaukee, but I won't believe it til I see it.

awww, sorry to hear that, but thanks for the heads up. This Sentry store is on my assignment list for June. Guess I can safel delete it, huh?

The Sentry foods in Waunakee( Madison area) closed within the last month. I kinda have the feeling the Sentry buy me in Middleton will close soon too cuz new managmewnt has run the store into the ground !
