Before taking gold to the local gold buyers who sell it somewhere else for a nice profit read this story on the Wall Street Journal to find out where they are taking it to get more money than what they gave you:

Last minute SERIOUSLY inexpensive Christmas gift idea:
breads! I know this is no revelation to most of us especially those of us who bake but for a non-baker like me, I just found out people truly love home-baked bread even if it's straight from a box! I made Jiffy cornbread and Jiffy blueberry bread yesterday for some of my son's school teachers. I got disposable round pans with lids 4 for $1 at Dollar Tree and each box of Jiffy bread was 39 cents. I used two eggs instead of one to make the bread fluffier (25 cents for two eggs or 12.5 cents if you decide to use only one egg as directed on the box). Plus 2 ounces of milk (about 5 cents if you buy the least expensive gallon for $2.50). Total cost: 95 cents including the pan and lid! Best of all, they looked and smelled really good, were still slightly warm (fresh-baked from the oven). And I wrote Merry Christmas on the lids with a red Sharpie in my most decorative handwriting. Took a total of 30 minutes to bake four of them for under $1 each gift! Today, I experimented with a large cranberry bread mix I bought from the 99 cents only store, omitted the suggested cranberry, pureed a can of peaches I had instead, baked it into three of the round pans with lids and it turned out just delightful! Total cost: 59 cents each including the peaches, mix, eggs, and pans! Amazing!! |

Today I found the esencia shampoo that's a rebate (in the coupon forum, on bottle). That's just a "chance" savings.
As someone posted somewhere on one of the boards/threads, I bought the big bag of animal stall all natural wood chips for the cat's litter box. It's a 3 cubic foot compressed package, not sure of pounds, maybe 30? But I've already been changing her box every other day for a couple of weeks and it's barely made a dent in the package. It looks like this bag will last about a year. But bear in mind, I have one old skinny kitty who doesn't have a crazy amount of waste. The total with tax came to about $7.40. I love that I don't get any of that nasty dust from the clay litter, too.

This is a great forum!
I am a single mom so I have really have to make my money stretch! I try to get a lot of my groceries for free by taking advantage of our grocery store's "freshness guarantee" policy (bring to their attention an expired item in their store and get a fresh one for free). Then I plan the week's menu around what I find. I have saved a lot of money this way. You would be surprised what you can find expired! Check with your store to see if they have this policy. It is usually unadvertised. I cook from scratch most of the time. When we are expecting a big get together at my house I cook something inexpensive that goes a long way. This weekend we are expecting a crowd and I am planning to make a big pot of chicken & dumplings (making the dumplings from scratch). I take left overs to eat at work for lunch. I rarely eat out. I buy most of the basic household supplies at the dollar general store......including flour, sugar, salt, laundry needs, trash bags, foil, ziploc, plastic wrap, etc. I coupon when I can.......and try using the coupons when the items are on sale, making it almost free. I recently saw advertised "making soda pop" from home and ordered one from soda stream. They claim it is cheaper to make it then to buy it. That is one luxury I like to drink every day. (It is supposed to arrive this week) I put most of my purchases/bills on two rewards credit cards to get the cash back & gift cards rewards, and pay them in full each month. It is fun to request free money once my cash back reaches $50 I am credit card debt free. I use tracfone and have double minutes for life. I recycle toner cartridges at office max (you get three dollars per recycled toner cartridge), and once I get enough store credit I will redeem it for prepaid tracfone cards that they sell. I ask family/friends to save their cartridges for me. I watch my bills closely....I make sure to lights & tv's are turned off when not in use....I keep the air on 76 degrees.....and turn it up to 80 when we are gone. I don't have long distance on our landline. I buy prepaid phone cards for long distance calls......and here recently I have signed up for free long distance with talkster.com, but haven't tried it out yet. These are some of the things I do!!! I love this website! Linda |

At our Winco Grocery Stores you can get 6 cents per bag (green bags, Costco bags, Trader Joes...doesn't matter) that you bring in to bag your groceries with. Not much, but every bit helps!

We finally got an Angel Food Ministry in our area. I've bought a box twice now and love it! For $30 today, we got 4 steaks, 4 chops, fish sticks, chicken nuggets, 3lb chicken breasts, 1lb hamburger, milk, eggs, lettuce, can of beans, rice, sweet potatoes, beef and noodle meal, corn, lima beans and a sliced lemon cake!
On our way there we stopped at any rummage sale we drove near, probably 6 or so. Didn't get a lot, but did get some goodies. I got a darling pair of pants new with tags for my baby niece for Christmas (just have to get a darling top) for 50cents, sweet little hoodie sweater with matching cap in new shape by Gap for $1.50 for a friend's baby, pair of winter boots in new condition for dd or me for $2, knitting needles/buttons/and some other craft thingy that I don't remember the name of for less than $1 total, like new shirt for dd for 25cents, and 4 pair of good condition boxers for ds for $1 total. Oh, and a pair of like new Adidas running pants for ds in our school teams' color that were marked for $3, but I offered less and we agreed on $1.50! ![]() Dd and I picked more blueberries and got a bucket full for about $14. We've been eating blueberry pancakes, blueberry muffins and blueberry jam. I'm going to dig out some more jars to can some more jam with what's left. I didn't share with any family, so I may use as part of a gift basket come Christmas. We've also been sharing dinner with friends and family more often. It costs less for all of us since we each are only responsible for part of the meal and oftentimes it is nearly free with cabbages, tomatoes and cukes from the garden. I haven't been in the Whole Foods store recently, but they did give me 3cents credit for using my own baggie to buy my bulk spice in. Not great savings, but good for the environment, so why not. A few more...
I re-use the B&BW foaming soap dispensers by adding regular Softsoap and water (1/2 and 1/2). I have also started re-using those same containers for my body wash. I filled the bottle partially full and then added water to completely fill it up. I hate the way that body wash just "plops" out on my puff and I feel like I'm wasting tons of it. Now it will "foam" out on my puff and I'll save tons (of course, all the body wash was free or close to it at CVS or Walgreens).
![]() Additionally, CVS recently had a Febreeze deal--can't remember now what it was--I got several of the pricey room deodorizers for pennies. Those will be gifts for birthdays and Christmas. Several times in the last year the K-Mart here has done the super doubles--doubling coupons of $2 and under. I got literally a box full of Pert shampoo for free. I absolutely despise Pert, but here's a little tip: use it to clean sinks, showers and toilets...it works great.

If you use dryer sheets take the used dryer sheet and use it to wipe down your shower. It cleans great.
I hang my laundry out on a line year round here in FL so I don't use that one myself. New dryer sheets (from the dollar store) are good for freshening the air in a closet or car. You can put them in shoes to prevent odor. |

I got 15 months out of my pricey Pureology Shampoo. 33.8 or 1 liter cost me $45 on sale over a year ago. A little goes a long way, and I usually shampoo the roots of my hair. About a dime a day for the good stuff, I'm happy!
Also made my first batch of Beach Fries (russett potatoes sliced and fried in Peanut Oil.) Amazing how much cheaper than buying them! |
