Question Planning a Tropical (frugal) wedding

Is it possible to have a frugal ($500 or less)....but nice wedding ceremony on a cruise ship or off the ship on a beach somewhere?

Does anyone know if it's possible for a couple to get married a cruise ship without buying one of the wedding packages they offer? I really can't see paying the prices of their wedding packages when it would just be 5 people....including the bride & groom....and a 6 yr old child. Not to mention the bride isn't old enough to drink. So, no need for champagne.

***We would sail with Carnival Cruise Line***

Policy is that you have to do a 7 day cruise to be married by a ships Captain. Shorter cruises do not allow for that amount of time for the Captain to see to his other duties.

So while it would be possible to do one on a 7 day cruise but not for that price.

There are other options of course.

My nephew got married in Aruba in '06, and I think he said that you had to be there something like 3 days (to fulfill a "residency" requirement?) in order to be married there; if that's correct, it wouldn't work for you on a cruise.

If your ship is going to the US Virgin Islands, it would probably be different - but you'd need to be sure to have all your required documents.

Another option would be a civil ceremony at home just before the cruise, and think of the cruise as the reception.

We got married on a 5 day carnival cruise a few years ago, but we used the all their wedding services. It departed from Tampa. One nice thing was that the wedding ceremony takes place well before the ship takes off, so even if guests cannot take the cruise, they can still come for the celebration-food and drinks. It was a lot of fun.

Was that before the new security measures went into place though? You used to be able to do it on a 5 day but now they do not allow it.

They also have changed the regulations on people boarding that are not sailing. Even as a travel agent it can be tough to get on board to do a ship inspection which used to be a normal every day thing.
