Today is 8/26 and I did a search for August shopping brags and did not find one! I know the month is almost over but back to school deals are in full gear and boy Sheldon and I pulled off a dilly of a deal!
Today is Teachers Appreciation Day at Staples in our area. Due to the kindness of people at YDF, FreeCycle and other boards I posted on I was able to get a TON of empty catridges and turn them in for $3 coupons at Staples (one local lady who runs a cartridge recycling company gave us a box full because certain kinds are only worth $.05 to her and are not worth the shipping to cash them in!!!). I don't have the final totals yet but . . . Based on my memory of the trips we made yesterday when we cashed in the cartridges (25 per person per store and then you can reedem 3 coupons per trip) plus the fact that one manager at a store we had a problem with about a month ago let us forgo sale limits, let us do multiple orders and gave us a dedicated cashier . . . We got . . . Approxiamtely 240 boxes of Crayola Markers (thin and thick -- on sale for $.68 each) Approximately 57 boxes of 24 pack Crayola crayons (Back to School price of $.49 per package) And more that Sheldon can use in his classroom . . . For instance he always likes to have the calender that has the date in big print and you rip it off each day to show the new date . . . He does a whole big thing with his students when they do the morning circle about the date, the day and the day of the week. The Staples brand one was about $17 but we were able to get $9 off. Sheldon finally got a 2006 one earlier this year and paid a lot more than even the $17 so he is set for 2007! We also found a cold lamination cartridge. I found a machine several years ago at Rite Aid at 75% off. The cartridges are hard to find but they had one for about $32 and $9 off made it even better! A three pack of scissors, tons of Elmer's glue (on sale for $.09), 4 packs of glue sticks ($.99), pencil cushions (these make it easier for the children to hold), and lots of stuff like that . . . For those who don't know my husband teaches special education for the city of New York. The art teacher moved to Peru and they have not replaced her so with no art teacher that means no art supplies are being ordered for these kids!!! His location is a satelitte location in another school so it makes it even more challenging . . . And his kids find it hard to communicate. Many are physically, mentally and emotionally challenged. With what we got we can help supply all of the other teachers in his program at his location . . . But wait there is more! At each location we got a Teacher's Appreciation bag filled with stuff. Some stores even gave us coupons for 2 free laminations . . . And I showed my business card (I work for a college) and they gave me a bag as well!!! My husband can share this stuff with the paraprofessionals who work in his classroom and the other teachers as well!!! And then to top it off . . . At the second to last store . . . the one with the manager who helped us out . . . At the table where they were giving out the teacher bags there was a Sharpie rep and a bunch of products they had on sale . . . As well as a raffle of a plastic container filled with Sharpie products including a 24 count of all of the colors of Sharpie permanant markers . . . We both got to fill out a raffle ticket (for free). My husband took our 17 month old for a walk while I checked out and in the middle of my orders THEY ANNOUNCED HE WON THE RAFFLE!!!! I SCREAMED and everyone looked at me I kept saying my husband won the raffle, my husband won the raffle! I started shaking with my pile of change to pay for the orders (they were all $1.04 or less except for stuff like the calendar and the lamination cartridge), the coupons and the products stacked in piles in my cart!!!My husband pulled the car around and we packed it all in the trunk with the stuff we got from the other stores. It is just amazing . . . I got such a thrill getting such awsome deals AND knowing that I am helping all of these kids and teachers! And we go back tomorrow because they have the Crayola colored pencils 4/$1!!!!!!!! We know the manager who will be in then too and we hope to get 36 per order ($9 worth) for a total of four orders. That way every teacher can have a full supply of art supplies plus the marble notebooks will be 2/$.78 . . . These are the books my husband needs for what they call communication books . . . Notes back and forth between parents/homes and the teacher!!!! I am exausted but it was SO worth it. Thank you for letting me share! Maddy Last edited by TSUalum93; 08-26-2006 at 04:28 PM. |
