Question Aldis or Save-A-Lot Better?

Sorry if this isn't in the right forum, but I just learned I have both within a 14 mile radius of the house. Aldis as it seems has gone up slightly in price but it still better than the other higher cost local shops. I've never been to Save-A-Lot but from what I can see in the store ads the prices maybe close to the same if not a bit better. My question is how is the quality? Worth the few extra mile drive to check it out?

*Save-A-Lot Review*

*I have not been to a Save-A-Lot Store to shop, however, found this review of the store if it may help any*

(This is not my review, was borrowed from another site) Others may have another opinion for you that have purchased from this store).

Pros
  • Lower prices on many items, Clean store
Cons
  • Have to bag yourself, Poor produce, Smaller selection than most stores

I'm pretty loyal to my local chain grocery store but occasionally I like to shop at Save-A-Lot for the lower prices on certain items. Save-A-Lot is a discount grocery store where you bag or box your own groceries.

I'm a comparison shopper so I like to think that I'm educated on prices. That said, I think that Save-A-Lot offers some pretty good deals on many things but I also know which products I can find for cheaper at other stores.

The best deals that I have found at Save-A-Lot are for most meats, frozen foods, baking goods, and breads. Therefore, I usually shop the perimeter of the store and seldom shop the aisles.

After buying frozen salmon for almost $20 at a warehouse store for several years, I was thrilled to discover that I can buy a good sized bag for less than $5 at Save-A-Lot. The same goes for other types of fish.
My local grocery store occasionally sells hotdogs on sale for around $1 per package but I always know that I can rely on Save-A-Lot for turkey franks for less than $1. Not only are the turkey franks cheaper, but they are also healthier than beef franks.

For a treat, my kids love those pre-packaged lunches that include crackers, sliced meat and cheese, and a candy bar. They cost over $2 per package at my grocery store but are always a reliable 99 cents at Save-A-Lot.

When I need baking goods such as flour, sugar, and spices, I purchase them from Save-A-Lot. Spices that cost over $3 per bottle at major grocery stores can often be found for less than $1 and are just as good in my opinion.

Lastly, I almost always find a good deal on a loaf of bread at Save-A-Lot. I wouldn't make a trip strictly for bread, but I usually add a loaf to my cart when I'm shopping there.

For other grocery items, I don't often purchase those at Save-A-Lot. The prices may be cheaper but I prefer to buy healthier low-fat foods and Save-A-Lot doesn't seem to carry many of those items. Also, because I'm a comparison shopper, I know what items are on sale at other stores that end up costing less than Save-A-Lot.

Occasionally, I will find something intriguing at Save-A-Lot such as the Bath Solutions, Inc. Sink Scents Scented Sink Strainer/Stopper that I found for only $1. However, if you are looking for a lot of variety, you won't find that at Save-A-Lot. I consider it a no frills type of store that sells basic goods at basic prices. There are name brand items, but again I can usually find those on sale at other stores.

One thing worth mentioning is that other than apples and potatoes, I've never had good luck with the produce at Save-A-Lot. It either
wasn't fresh or didn't taste very good.

Overall, I think that Save-A-Lot is a great resource for finding good prices on several items. I wouldn't do all of my major shopping there but I know enough to buy the quality items that my family likes at great prices.

*Aldi - Garden City, MI Ratings and Reviews*

*Aldi - Garden City, MI Ratings and Reviews*

*Once Again, these are not my reviews as this store is not in my area*

Pros

Cons

budget conscious

I have shopped at Aldi-Garden City, MI since it opened a few years back. The prices are great. I get a lot of snacks for my kids school lunches there and your really cannot beat their prices.
I don't mind generic products if they taste good and there have only been a few things that I did not like that they have. The Aldi-Garden City, MI is always clean and neat. The workers are nice and friendly. The lines move quickly and I like the way they have it where you pay 25 cents for your cart and when you are done you get your money back. It keeps the parking lot free and clear of of carts.

I do recommend Aldi-Garden City, MI, for fast and friendly service with great prices.

loyal shopper, cost-conscious, Mom of 3!, budget-conscious

I have shopped at this store since we moved to our house about a year and a half ago.
The everyday prices at ALDI are wonderful, and they even run sales every week on things I use. Many of my usual grocery list items (sour cream, yogurt, lettuce, bread, etc.) are much cheaper at ALDI's everyday prices than I would pay for them at any of my other local grocery stores. A lot of the time, their everyday prices are even cheaper than the other stores' sale prices!
I have no problems with buying and eating "generic" brand items, and my family actually prefers some of the ALDI brands to the major brand names out there.
At this store, because I shop there about once each week, I have noticed that the employees are very sweet. They always greet me, and if I need help with something, someone is always very willing to help. Since they are a smaller store, I find that I am dealing with the same person or persons more frequently, which is pleasant.
